Opportunity Pavilion – BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group)

BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) the Copenhagen and New York based firm won the design for the Opportunity Pavilion out of thirteen other entries in a world-wide competition. The competition, launched by Emaar Properties awarded BIG’s submission for the Opportunity Pavilion, while Foster and Partners will design the Mobility Pavilion, and Grimshaw Architects will be responsible for the Sustainability Pavilion.

Opportunity means the capacity to connect people and foster a worldly cultural exchange. Opportunity, like in the Sustainability Pavilion, means the urgent need to introduce innovative materials and technologies. BIG insists on the opportunity to realize a self-sustained building. The pavilion will have a saw-tooth form oriented to the north to use the maximum of natural light from the north, while its south part will be covered by photovoltaic panels.

These will harness solar energy to power the pavilion and its exhibits, thus becoming an almost completely self-sustained building. What is more, the pavilion will present a maximum roof surface, for a minimum footprint on the ground, hence it will have the maximum shading capacity for the minimum of volume touching the floor.
