Dubai Airport – AL Maktoum

Al Maktoum International Airport, which opened in 2013, is currently the second largest airport in Dubai.
Located near Jebel Ali, it will gradually be expanded to take over from Dubai International Airport, currently the world’s busiest airport and home to Emirates airline, which will move to Al Maktoum in 2025. When its expansion is completed, it will become the largest airport in the world with the capacity to handle 240 million passengers a year. [It currently handles about seven million passengers.] The plan is Al Maktoum to become an international port of call just next to the Expo Site. The entire project will cost 32 billions of dollars for an approximately 150,000 square meters area.
More than its size, the new airport stands out for its high-tech features, in line with Expo 2020 theme of connectivity and technology. Its design is thought to ensure to cut time spent completing travel formalities and reduce walking distances, enabling passengers to make fast and efficient connections. This will be achieved thanks to Biometrics & Smart Passenger Tracking, such as iris scan, palm scan, RFID boarding cards to facilitate the flow of passengers with minimum paper processing. Queuing will also be reduced by limiting the number of passengers/baggage processes at the airport terminal, as well as allowing passengers to separate from their bags as early as possible.
