The Frame – Dubai

Too big for a selfie, big enough to be considered the next Dubai landmark. Indeed, it is best to consider the landmarks of Dubai on a macro and not micro level, and what best than a framing structure over the entire city of Dubai?

In the last years, after the 2008 crisis, Dubai has invested more and more on quality than quantity, adding to its landscape, projects designed by named architects such as Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid to name just a few. One of the last design is by the architect Fernando Donis. In 2008 Donis won an international competition out of 926 proposals. The contest was overseen by the German ThyssenKrupp Elevator, and governed by the rules of the International Union of Architects, an organization affiliated with Unesco that lays down a code of conduct for professionals.

The Mexican-born architect is already known for his design of Dubai’s Porsche Design Towers, and the Dubai Renaissance Tower, but also the CCTV headquarters in Beijing together with OMA. Donis designed The Frame back in 2013 thinking about two 150 meters tall and 93 meters wide towers, connected by a 100 meter long bridge in between. The bridge, covered in glass, will host a coffee shop and a panoramic belveder, allowing a walk through the sky.
